Here is the song. Powerful vocals, powerful bass. Everything in the song is screaming for attention for this is the underlying purpose of the song; the lyrics are a pleading to a young beautiful and impressionable girl, perhaps she is like the Jezebel of Sade’s song reincarnated? Consider the opening’s of the songs “Jezebel, what a belle, looks like a princess in her new dress” compared with “Baby’s empy bottle, part time model wrapped in your world”.
At the beginning of the song Kane is sizing up the girl, approaching her lyrically, and then the emotion outpours, this angel is angry with a righteous anger, like that of a parent, sympathising softly and poetic at every turn but resolute with an authority that we can’t question. It is almost as if after years of Sade’s passive understanding has turned her impatient and fiesty, and now we have a fiesty Kane who has not time for this nonsense, who is now on the brink of judging the Jezebel who never learns.
This song is a real fusion of sounds, to match this mixture of emotions all expressed with clarity, just as Kane’s vocal range is expressed in sublime clarity. There is a sonic harmony achieved in the bridge that I do not have the words to express, but I will try via analogy. It is something like a nuanced sigh, it’s like pure musical carthasis. It’s almost like her vocals have applied such pressure to the ‘well of lies’ that it is now overflowing. Because how do you convince someone in love that they can’t make the other person love them? You can’t, its futile to try, but try she must and does with every breath in her voice.
Takeaway line: “Lies like springwater you drink from every night”
